What is devotion and how can we practice bhakti yoga? Sadhguru explains how a devotee is someone who has the right perspective in place in existence.

Sadhguru: At the moment, the only things you experience are your body, your mind and your emotions. You know them to some degree, and you can deduce that if these three things are to happen as they happen, there must be an energy that is causing them to happen. Without energy, none of this can happen. For example, a microphone amplifies the sound. Even if you don’t know anything about the microphone, you can conclude that there is a source driving it. These are the only four realities in your life: body, mind, emotion and energy. Whatever you want to do with yourself, it has to be on these four levels. When you use your emotions and try to achieve the ultimate, we call this bhakti yoga, the path of devotion. If you use your intelligence and try to achieve the ultimate, we call this gnana yoga, the path of intelligence. When you use your body or physical action to achieve the ultimate, we call this karma yoga, the path of action. When you transform your energies and try to achieve the ultimate, we call this kriya yoga, which means internal action. These are the only four ways you can work with yourself.

What is bhakti yoga?

There was a time when his emotion was the most dominant factor in a human. Today, emotion is not the most dominant part in you, but it is still the most intense part in you. Most people cannot bring their physical body to a high level. It takes a lot of effort to keep the body intense. People can keep the mind intense from time to time, but very few people are able to maintain an intense mind. In general, people are not at all intense in energy. They only know certain moments of intensity, not a constant intensity. But emotion can get very intense. If not love, at least in anger you are intense. In a certain emotion you are able to be intense. If I cannot make you intense with love or joy, if I abuse you, at least you will become intense with anger – intense to a point where you will not sleep all night. When I tell you: & # 39; Sit down and stay awake. I will teach yoga & # 39; you fall asleep. But if I abuse you, you will stay up all night. Angry people can’t sleep, right? So emotion has always been the dominant factor in people.

Bhakti yoga: using intensity of emotion

The only thing is that emotion can take different forms. It can take very sweet and beautiful shapes, it can take absolutely nasty and horrifying shapes. The thing is to train it to take on a sweet and beautiful shape. Dedication is a way to transform your emotion from negativity to pleasure. Just look, people who have fallen in love don’t care about what’s going on in the world. As they are, you think they are unrealistic. It’s just that they made their emotions pleasant, so their life is beautiful. That is the condition of a devotee. Devotion is a multiplied and improved version of a love affair. A devotee has an infallible love affair because if you fall in love with a man or a woman, they don’t go as you expect, and it ends up in trouble. That is why people choose God. It’s just a love affair and you don’t expect a reaction. Your life becomes completely beautiful because your emotion has become so sweet. One grows through that sweetness. That’s dedication. Dedication is another dimension of intelligence. Intellect wants to conquer the truth. Dedication simply embraces the truth. Devotion cannot decipher, but devotion can. Intellect can decipher but can never experience it. This is the choice to make.

Dedication: a question of perspective

Bhakti Yoga: The Nature of Devotion 1

A diagram of the location of the Earth in the universe in a series of eight maps shown from left to right, starting with the Earth moving towards the solar system, towards the sunbeam interstellar neighborhood, towards the Milky Way, towards the local galactic group, to the Virgo Supercluster, on our local superclusters, and ends at the observable universe.

When you are overwhelmed by something or someone, you naturally become pious. But if you try to practice devotion, it causes problems because the boundary between devotion and deception is very thin – it will lead you to so many hallucinations. So you cannot practice devotion, but you can do certain things so that you come to devotion. If you recognize only one thing, you automatically become a devotee: the cosmos is very large. You don’t know where it starts or where it ends. There are hundreds of billions of galaxies. In this vast cosmos, this solar system is a tiny speck. If the solar system disappears tomorrow, it will not even be noticed in the cosmos. In this small dot of a solar system, planet Earth is a micro dot. In this micro-speck of a planet, the city you live in is a super micro-speck. You are one in that big Man! This is a serious perspective problem. Only for that reason there is no devotion in you. If you can’t imagine the expanse, the Hubble telescope has put all kinds of fantastic photos on the internet. Just look at the photos and see how endless it is. Or go out at night, turn off the lights and look at the sky. You don’t know where it starts or where it ends, and here you are a micro super micro dust spinning on a planet, not knowing where you are from or where you are going. It will be very natural for you to be pious. You bow to everything you see. If you only look at yourself with reference to the rest of the creation, there is no other way to go. Only because people have lost sight of who they are and what their place is in this existence have they become arrogant fools. With all our science, we haven’t even invented a single atom as a whole. We know things in bits and pieces, we know how to use them, but we don’t know what it is. If you realize this, if you observe everything, a leaf, a flower, an atom, a bird, an animal, an ant, then you cannot fully understand one thing. Then you bow to everything. Even an atom is beyond your reach. That is the nature of creation. If you pay attention to the nature of creation, how can you not be a devotee? A simple thing you can do is to consider everything in this existence as higher than yourself. The stars are definitely higher, but try to see the small pebble on the street higher than yourself. Either way, it’s more permanent, more stable than you. It can sit still forever! If you learn to look at everything around you with care and attention, you will realize that you cannot even fully imagine the nature of an atom. Everything is above your intelligence. Everything is higher than you, you become pious by nature. A devotee knows things you can’t even imagine. He can contain things you are struggling with, because there is not much of him in him. If you are too full of yourself, there is no room for something higher to happen. Dedication doesn’t mean you have to be a temple-owning, pooja-doing, coconut-breaking person. A devotee has understood what his place in existence is. When you understand this and you are aware of it, you walk like a devout person. There is no other way to be. It is a very intelligent way of living.
