Pay Attention - Yoga for Concentration

Sadhguru speaks about the importance of paying attention and highlighting our attention.

Sadhguru: The only reason someone is a mystic and someone is not is lack of attention. Someone is an artist, someone is not. Why? Lack of attention. Someone can shoot straight and someone cannot. Why? Lack of attention. From the simplest to the highest things, it’s just a lack of attention.

Your levels of attention are different at different times, and what peak attention you’ve had at any point in your life is still not all. You are capable of much more attention.

Whatever level of attention you have now, that’s not all. There is more, but it is still unnecessary, it is still in a non-manifest state that you cannot access it. So at least you have to pay for everything you have. But even with your mental attention, you are at different levels of attention at different times in your life and at different times of the day. When you do your job, you have one level of attention. When you are in meditation, you have a different level of attention. If you eat something that you really like, you have a different level of attention. Your levels of attention are different at different times, and what peak attention you’ve had at any point in your life is still not all. You are capable of much more attention.

A few years ago, I took a small group of people on a trek on a railway between Subramanya and Mangalore. This stretch has over 300 bridges and 100 tunnels. You are usually on a bridge or in a tunnel and it is an absolutely beautiful mountain. Some tunnels are over a kilometer long. Even during the day it is pitch dark. You cannot see your own hand in front of you. Most likely, most people have never been to such a place, because wherever you are, there is some light. Even the starlight gives you some visibility. But in those tunnels you don’t know after a while whether your eyes are open or closed, it’s that dark.

Spirituality only happens because you paid attention to your life and you saw that you don’t know where it starts and where it ends.

I passed them through those tunnels without torches. People were so scared at first, but after a while they started to walk slowly and enjoy the whole experience. When you are in such a place, your attention is really raised. If you can keep your attention like this at any time in your life, you will glow. You will really glow.

In the ashram I constantly force people to notice even small things. This is not just about the cleanliness or aesthetics of the place, but to pay absolutely attention to everything. If a pebble is turned over, you should notice it. It’s not a matter of the pebble, it’s just that you are considerate. If you bring this attention to a peak, if you learn to get a heightened sense of attention, then we can teach you methods about what you should and should not do in yourself.

If you pay much more attention to everything, if you increase your attention, it can be used in wonderful ways.

At the moment we are still working on people to get them to a certain level. If you become very considerate, we can see how you can use that attention. Spirituality only happens because you paid attention to your life and you saw that you don’t know where it starts and where it ends. You go around as if everything you do is all and end all life. The moment you pay a little attention, you understand, “This is not it.”

So the very first step of even spiritual thinking came only through a certain amount of attention. If you pay much more attention to everything, if you increase your attention, it can be used in wonderful ways.
